My favorite is JEdit. You can do just about any type of text editting with it. You can write C/C++ program code, Java code, html documents, and plain text. All of it is written in Java, so it can be run on just about any machine with a Virtual Machine. (The interpreter that runs all Java code.)

There are literally thousands of different types of projects here. Games, utilities, anything! Best of all, if you find a problem in the code, you can make the change yourself, send it back in, and they can use it. This is one of the most popular opensource communities on the Internet. ¶ 12:20 AM
